Title: Controller - Vertically Integrated Petroleum and Convenience Store Chain

Position Title: Controller

Job Summary: Controller will be responsible manage day to day functions of finance and accounting departments providing information, primarily financial in nature, about all company activities that will assist CFO and other senior management in making educated economic decisions about the company's current and future needs. The Controller will personally engage in the more critical and confidential aspects of accounting, provide special reports and analyses as requested by management along with recommendations. The Controller will ensure systems and special financial studies to support corporate objectives.

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the activities of the company’s accounting department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, monthly financial statements and related key financial metric reports for the company and related real estate holding companies.  
  • Oversee the activities of the disbursement department, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable and other disbursements.
  • Oversee the activities of the accounts receivable department to ensure the accurate and timely management of billings, cash receipts, application and reporting of payment collection issues.  
  • Oversees the activities of fuel accounting, ensuring timely and accurate matching of agreed pricing to BOL’s and vendor invoices and reconciling and communicating discrepancies with key company staff and third-party customers. Other fuel accounting oversite responsibilities include the processing and reconciling of company and customer credit cards from fuel suppliers & reconciling fuel reports.  
  • Oversees the loss prevention and internal audit group, ensuring timely & accurate cost, lottery, and retail inventory counts, investigating differences and waste reporting. Work with operations & third party safe/armored car service on cash & vault issues. Additionally, the group oversees required training of store and audit staff.  
  • Assures accurate and timely preparation of monthly sales and motor fuel tax reporting.  
  • Assure timely completion of all required information for the outside accounting firm to complete the year end compilation and 401k audit.  
  • Assures timely completion of all required information for the Outside Tax/Accounting Firm to prepare corporate income tax returns. Works with Tax/Accounting Firm to assure company is compliant with most recent tax regulations and guidelines.
  • Together with CFO, establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes, and data to protect the company's assets.
  • Manage and supervise accounting staff in accordance with the company policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning, directing work, assuring proper backup, rewarding, disciplining, performance reviews, mentoring and addressing complaints & resolving problems.
  • Work with Marketing Department regarding proper accounting of vendor rebates.
  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, clients, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Develop a high-level knowledge of the ERP System to mentor, guide and train accounting department users to extent necessary
  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
  • Perform any other duties that are assigned by management
 

Skills/Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting.
  • Gasoline/Convenience industry experience required. Preference given to applicants with PDI experience.
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred with solid GAAP and financial reporting technical skills highly preferred
  • Possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, financial statements and government regulations.
  • Requisite skills in MS Office Suite.
  • Leverage strengths of the current accounting team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
